Hubert Ira Davis Jr.is an American basketball player and therefore the head coach of the North Carolina Tar Heels men's five .Davis played within the National Basketball Association (NBA) for the ny Knicks, Toronto Raptors, Dallas Mavericks, Washington Wizards, Detroit Pistons, and New Jersey Nets from 1992 to 2004. he's the nephew of Walter Davis, another former Tar Heel and NBA player.
Early life : Davis attended Lake Braddock lyceum in Burke, Virginia, where he averaged 28.0 points per game in his senior year. He attended an equivalent highschool as as future Tar Heel women's soccer great and Olympic medalist Mia Hamm. He went on to the University of North Carolina, where he holds the record for the very best career three-point percentage in UNC history. In his junior year, he helped lead the Tar Heels to their first Final Four appearance since the Tar Heels won it beat 1982. After averaging 21.4 points per game in his senior year at UNC, he graduated in 1992 with a degree in criminal justice.
Personal life : Davis and his wife Leslie have three children, Elijah, Bobbie Grace, and Micah. Elijah are going to be playing college basketball for University of Lynchburg starting within the 2021-2022 season. Davis may be a devout Christian.
Professional Career : The ny Knicks selected Davis with the 20th overall pick within the 1992 NBA Draft. He made the winning free throws after Hue Hollins called a disputed foul against Scottie Pippen in Game 5 of the 1994 Eastern conference semifinals against the Chicago Bulls, giving the Knicks an 87-86 win.Davis remained with ny for four years, and was traded to the Toronto Raptors before the 1996-97 season.
Starting in 2008, Davis began working for ESPN as a university basketball analyst.On May 2, 2012, Davis returned to UNC as an assistant under Roy Williams. Davis also served as head coach of UNC's JV five , the sole JV team within the ACC. He helped the Tar Heels win the 2017 NCAA Men's Basketball tournament.
Williams retired on April 1, 2021. Four days later, on April 5, Davis was announced because the 19th head coach in Tar Heel basketball history, and therefore the first African-American to steer the program.
Although he had never been a head coach at the Division I level, Williams had been grooming him for a head coaching much within the same way that Dean Smith had groomed him during Williams' tenure as an assistant from 1978 to 1988.
In 2021 Davis becomes North Carolina’s first, and long overdue, Black football or coach , and he had the crucial backing of his predecessor, Roy Williams.
