Swiss and her younger brother were at Oxford High School on Nov. 30 when a fellow student opened fire in a hallway, killing four of their classmates and injuring six others, including a teacher.
“It’s been difficult,” she admitted to “AGT” judges on Tuesday night as she discussed her life since the shooting. She revealed that following the tragedy last fall, she and her brother decided “there’s no way we’re ever stepping foot back in the school,” but she eventually returned to class and moved on by thinking positively.
Swiss’ performance earned her enthusiastic “yes” votes from all four “AGT” judges —Simon Cowell, Heidi Klum, Sofia Vergara and Howie Mandel — which means the Metamora resident will be advancing in the competition.
Mandel, referencing the storm Swiss has weathered in recent months, said: “In life, it’s tough to show up, especially after going through incredible trauma. The fact that you can break through that and shine the way you did today is so inspirational.”
Vergara was similarly enthusiastic. “You took my breath away,” she said. “You were not just singing; you were showing us your feelings and you gave me goose bumps.”Swiss sang at a candlelight vigil for the victims in the days following the Oxford school shooting, performing R&B artist Andra Day’s “Rise Up.”
She sang the national anthem at a Detroit Pistons game at Little Caesars Arena in February, where she was joined on the court by members of her school’s boys and girls varsity basketball teams. She also sang the national anthem before Oakland County Executive David Coulter’s State of the County address in March.
