Turnbull’s career began in 1978 at the Scottish local station Radio Clyde, and he later freelanced in the United States for several years. Turnbull began his career at the BBC as a reporter for the Today programme in 1986 and as a reporter for Breakfast Time in 1988, before becoming a correspondent for BBC News in 1990. He reported from over thirty countries on a wide range of domestic and international stories, including a four-year stint as Washington Correspondent based in the United States. Sian Williams was his producer for a while. In this capacity, he covered a variety of major American stories, including the O. J. Simpson murder trial and the Monica Lewinsky scandal, which rocked Bill Clinton’s presidency.

Turnbull returned to the UK in 1997 and became one of the main presenters on BBC News 24, alongside Valerie Sanderson. He also hosted regular shows on Radio 5 Live, including a stint as a Weekend Breakfast host. Turnbull joined the BBC Breakfast team in 2001 as a weekend presenter, initially alongside Sian Williams and later alongside Sarah Montague, Mishal Husain, and Susanna Reid.
