David Noble Professional Career

Noble, a Tasmanian rover, began his senior football career in 1985 with North Hobart in the Tasmanian Football League. He was soon named vice-captain of the club and went on to win statewide titles in 1987 and 1989. Fitzroy selected Noble with the 111th pick in the 1989 Australian Football League draught.

At Fitzroy, he mostly played in the reserves. Fitzroy’s senior debut in Round 6, 1991, was the first of four premiership matches played on his former home ground, North Hobart Oval, between 1991 and 1992 – but it was a disaster for Fitzroy, who lost by 157 points to Hawthorn. He only played one more senior game for Fitzroy. During his career, he appeared in two state of origin games for Tasmania.

Noble played for Prahran in the Victorian Football Association in 1992. In 1993 and 1994, he was captain-coach of the Upwey-Tecoma Football Club in the Yarra Valley Mountain District Football League, where he won two premierships and two best-and-fairest awards. Noble announced his retirement from the game at the end of 1994.

Noble moved to South Australia in 2003 and served as senior coach at Glenelg in the SANFL in 2003 and 2004, but the club did not make the finals. He then joined the AFL’s Adelaide Crows, where he spent over a decade as an assistant coach (2005-10), list manager (2011-13), and head of football (2014-16).

During that ten-year period, he was an integral part of the club’s eight finals campaigns. He left Adelaide in September 2016 to become the Brisbane Lions General Manager of Football, where he spent four years overseeing the Lions’ return to finals football.

Noble returned to coaching in 2021, after ten years as an administrator, and became the senior coach of North Melbourne on an open-ended staff contract. Noble took over a club that had finished second-last in 2020 and led it to the wooden spoon in 2021.

He became known for his tough coaching style, with it being said that in his first season he delivered more sprays than former coach Brad Scott had delivered in his 912 year tenure; and drew such condemnation for the spray he delivered after his team’s “embarrassing” 108-point loss to the Brisbane Lions at the Gabba in Round 3, 2022, that he apologised days later.
