Patel’s acting career began in 2006, when he auditioned for the E4 teen drama television series Skins. Patel’s mother saw the casting call in Metro and drove him there despite the fact that he had a science exam the next day. He was cast in the role of Anwar Kharral, a British Pakistani Muslim teenager, after two auditions. Anwar’s character was inspired in part by Patel’s personality, and the role was written specifically for him after he was cast in Skins. Patel, who had no professional acting experience, admitted that “the first day of shooting I really didn’t know what to do.”
