Cruz started his professional MMA career in 2005, competing in the Rage in the Cage and Total Combat organisations. Before joining World Extreme Cagefighting, he had a 9-0 record (WEC). World Extreme Cagefighting merged with the Ultimate Fighting Championship on October 28, 2010. (UFC). All WEC fighters were transferred to the UFC as part of the merger.

On July 2, 2011, at UFC 132, a rematch with Urijah Faber took place as the first defence of the new UFC Bantamweight title. Cruz won a close fight in which Faber dropped Cruz multiple times with strikes and Cruz landed multiple legbody kicks, knees, and takedowns to retain his championship and avenge his only loss on his record at the time.

Cruz won a unanimous decision over Demetrious Johnson in his second UFC title defence on October 1, 2011, at UFC on Versus 6. In the first round, Cruz broke his right hand. Cruz was set to face Urijah Faber for the third time for the UFC bantamweight title after Faber defeated Brian Bowles in a bantamweight title eliminator bout at UFC 139.

Cruz was chosen to coach The Ultimate Fighter: Live against Urijah Faber in December 2011.The rematch between Cruz and Faber was scheduled for July 7, 2012, at UFC 148.Cruz was forced to withdraw from the fight on May 7, 2012, citing a torn ACL. Cruz underwent another ACL surgery on December 3, 2012, after his body rejected one from a cadaver, with an expected recovery time of six to nine months.

Cruz was supposed to fight interim UFC Bantamweight Champion Renan Baro in a rematch at UFC 169 on February 1, 2014.On a January 6 SportsCenter episode, UFC president Dana White announced that Dominick Cruz had torn his groyne and vacated the UFC Bantamweight Championship; White promoted Baro to undisputed UFC Bantamweight Champion, and announced that Baro’s first unified title defence would be against Urijah Faber at UFC 169.

Cruz returned to the octagon on September 27, 2014, at UFC 178, after nearly three years away due to injuries. He faced Takeya Mizugaki.Cruz won the fight with punches after a takedown in the first round.Cruz also received his first Performance of the Night bonus award as a result of his victory.

Dana White confirmed at the post-fight press conference that Cruz’s next fight would be for the Bantamweight Championship against T.J. Dillashaw.Cruz then announced on December 22, 2014, that he had torn the ACL in his other knee, putting him out for the rest of the season.Cruz was scheduled to fight Jimmie Rivera on December 30, 2017, at UFC 219, but on November 8, it was revealed that Cruz had broken his arm and would be forced to withdraw from the card.

Cruz was scheduled to face John Lineker at UFC 233 on January 26, 2019.Cruz injured his shoulder and had to withdraw from the fight on December 11, 2018.Cruz then stated that he expects to be out of competition for another year.Cruz replaced José Aldo and will face Henry Cejudo for the UFC Bantamweight Championship on May 9, 2020, at UFC 249.Cruz was knocked out in the second round by a TKO.

Cruz fought Casey Kenney at UFC 259 on March 6, 2021.He won the fight by unanimous decision.Cruz fought Pedro Munhoz at UFC 269 on December 11, 2021.Despite being knocked down twice in the first round, he won the fight by unanimous decision.The fight was awarded the Fight of the Night bonus.Cruz was supposed to fight Marlon Vera at UFC on ESPN 41 on August 13, 2022.He was knocked out in round four by a head kick.
