Smith attended Wade Hampton High School and Spartanburg Methodist College in Varnville, South Carolina. Smith was drafted in the third round of the 1984 Major League Baseball (MLB) draught by the Chicago Cubs. In 1989, he made his Major League Baseball debut with the Chicago Cubs. Smith hit.324 as a rookie, with nine home runs and 52 RBI (RBIs).

He came in second in the voting for the National League Rookie of the Year Award, trailing teammate Jerome Walton, who received 22 of the 24 first-place votes; Smith received the other two.Smith batted 3-for-15 in the Cubs’ loss to the San Francisco Giants in the 1989 National League Championship Series.Smith struggled in 1990, batting.262, and was demoted from the Cubs’ starting lineup in 1991.
