Eugene Melnyk Career
Melnyk started the Trimel Corporation, a medical publishing company that summarised key medical research into shorter, more accessible notes for clinicians, in 1982. In 1987, Trimel went public and was sold to Thomson Publications. Melnyk established Biovail Corporation, a specialist pharmaceutical company, in 1989.
Biovail’s revenues increased from $19 million in 1995 to $1.067 billion in 2006 during his tenure as chairman and CEO. One of Biovail’s goals was to find pharmaceuticals with patents that had expired and then reinvent them using the company’s unique technologies. One example is developing medications with controlled-release properties that allow patients to take the medication once a day rather than multiple times.
Melnyk established Neurolign Technologies Inc. in 2019, a medical device firm focused on the diagnosis and treatment of neurological illnesses. He was the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the corporation. The NCC and RendezVous secured an agreement in January 2018 to redevelop LeBreton Flats in two phases. However, in November 2018, the NCC indicated that “partnership problems” with RendezVous had yet to be resolved, and that the project could be scrapped and restarted in January 2019.
The Senators’ organisation was later discovered to be suing Trinity Developments, in part because of a Trinity development on the south side of Albert Street.
The two sides agreed to meet in mediation to discuss the project, but they were unable to reach an agreement. Since then, the NCC has come up with a new proposal that includes space for an arena. Melnyk was served with a countersuit by Trinity Development.
Melnyk purchased the Ottawa Senators NHL franchise, as well as their arena, the Corel Centre, on August 26, 2003. The team was facing bankruptcy and an unclear future in Ottawa at the time, and was purchased for US$92 million when he secured an agreement with the franchise’s creditors after Rod Bryden’s bid to purchase the team failed.
