Ward went on to study acting at the Herbert Berghof Studio and in Rome. He worked as a mime and dubbed Italian films while in Italy until he made his acting debut in two Roberto Rossellini films. Ward returned to the United States in the early 1970s and worked in experimental theatre and on television. In Hearts of the West, he played a cowboy for the first time in an American film (1975). His first notable part was as fellow escapee John Anglin in Clint Eastwood’s film Escape from Alcatraz (1979). In Walter Hill’s Southern Comfort, he played a brutal National Guardsman (1981).

Timerider: The Adventure of Lyle Swann was his first major motion picture role (1982). After that, he played astronaut Gus Grissom in The Right Stuff, Gene Hackman’s action film Uncommon Valor, and the drama Silkwood (all 1983). Following co-starring appearances in Swing Shift (1984) and Secret Admirer (1985), he starred as the titular character in Guy Hamilton’s action film Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins.

The film was scheduled to be the first of a planned series based on the novels in the Destroyer series.Despite the fact that Ward was featured on the cover of multiple film publications, the film only made $15 million.
