Long was selected by the Oakland Raiders in the second round of the 1981 NFL Draft. He wore the number 75 for 13 seasons. Long was named to the Raiders’ defensive line eight times.Early in his career, he had lofty goals. In 1986, he told Football Digest that he wanted “financial security and to be in the Hall of Fame. That’s my goal, and I’d like to win a few more Super Bowls.”

He was also named first-team All-Pro three times and second-team All-Pro twice. He was named to John Madden’s All-Madden teams in 1984 and 1985, as well as the 10th Anniversary All-Madden team in 1994.

In 1985, Long was named NFL Alumni Defensive Lineman of the Year and NFLPA AFC Defensive Lineman of the Year. Long’s signature defensive move was the “rip,” which used a quick, uppercut-like motion to break an opposing blocker’s grip.[citation needed]Pro Football Weekly (PFW) named Long to its All-Time 3-4 defensive front, along with Lee Roy Selmon, Curley Culp, Lawrence Taylor, Andre Tippett, Randy Gradishar, and Harry Carson. PFW’s “Ultimate 3-4” team was chosen by a vote of over 40 former NFL players, coaches, and scouts.

Long pursued an acting career after retiring from the NFL after the 1993 season, focusing primarily on action films, including Firestorm, a 1998 film in which he starred. He also co-starred in the suspense film Broken Arrow, alongside John Travolta.

He appeared in the film 3000 Miles to Graceland as a supporting actor alongside Kevin Costner, Kurt Russell, and Courteney Cox. In Whatever You Do! Long appears in the extended cut of the film, released on DVD in 2007, as Mr. White’s (Tom Hanks) “partner” Lloyd. Long’s role was completely excised from the theatrical release.

Long also appeared in a number of TV shows and commercials as a cameo. Long was a Radio Shack spokesperson, appearing in commercials alongside actress Teri Hatcher. He has also appeared in commercials and advertising campaigns for Coors Light, Nike, Campbell’s Chunky Soup, Hanes, Frito Lay, Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Pizza Hut, Taco Bell, Nabisco, Kraft, the Bud Bowl campaign, Honda, and Chevrolet.
