Iker Casillas Fernández is a former Spanish professional football goalkeeper. Casillas, nicknamed “San Iker” for his ability to make spectacular saves, is widely regarded as one of the greatest goalkeepers of all time.He is well-known for his athleticism, quick reactions, and exceptional shot-blocking ability. Casillas, who spent the majority of his career at Real Madrid, is one of the few players to have played in over 1000 professional matches. He also holds the record for the most clean sheets in the UEFA Champions League and for the Spain national team.

Casillas began his club career with Real Madrid’s youth team before being promoted to the first team in 1999, when he became the club’s youngest goalkeeper to play in the Champions League final and win the title, at the age of 19 years and four days. Casillas quickly established himself as Real Madrid’s first-choice goalkeeper, winning two Champions Leagues and two La Liga titles in his first three seasons and establishing himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the world.

Casillas won all major club titles during his highly successful career in Madrid, including five La Liga titles, four Supercopa de Espaa titles, two Copa del Rey titles, three UEFA Champions Leagues, two UEFA Super Cups, two Intercontinental Cups, and the FIFA Club World Cup. Casillas left Real Madrid after 25 years to join FC Porto on a free transfer in 2015, where he won the Primeira Liga and the Cândido de Oliveira Supertaça.

He set the record for the most consecutive seasons played in the UEFA Champions League (20) and the most appearances in the competition while at Porto (177). He retired from football in February 2020, after nearly a year on the sidelines due to a heart attack suffered during a training session with Porto in May 2019.

Casillas has 167 international caps for the Spain national team, making him the joint tenth-most capped footballer of all time. Casillas was an unused substitute at UEFA Euro 2000 before becoming the country’s first choice goalkeeper at the 2002 World Cup and going on to play in UEFA Euro 2004 and the 2006 World Cup.

He was named captain in 2008 and led the team to the European Championship title that year. Casillas also led Spain to their first World Cup victory in 2010, keeping a tournament-record five clean sheets and winning the Yashin Award for best goalkeeper. Spain became the first nation to retain the European Championship, winning it again in 2012, where he set the competition record for the most consecutive minutes without conceding a goal (509). Casillas became one of four players to represent Spain in four World Cups in 2014.

Casillas finished fourth overall in the Ballon d’Or in 2008, and he was named to the UEFA Team of the Year six times in a row from 2007 to 2012, a record for a goalkeeper. Casillas was also named to the FIFPro World XI five times, a record for a goalkeeper, as well as the IFFHS World’s Best Goalkeeper five times, alongside Gianluigi Buffon and Manuel Neuer. He was named by the same organization as the second best goalkeeper of the twenty-first century, behind Buffon, and the second best goalkeeper of the previous 25 years.
