A member of the Democratic Party , he served one term on the Colorado State Board of Education from 2001 to 2007 and five terms because the US Representative from Colorado's 2nd district from 2009 to 2019.

During his time in Congress, he was the sole Democratic member of the libertarian conservative Liberty Caucus. He was elected governor of Colorado in 2018, defeating Republican nominee Walker Stapleton.

He graduated from Princeton University with a B.A. in politics in 1996, writing a 157-page senior thesis, "Paradigm Shift: Politics within the Information Age", under the supervision of Carol M. Business career : Polis co-founded American Information Systems (AIS), Inc. while still in college. AIS was an online access provider and was sold in 1998. In 1996, he co-founded a free electronic card website, bluemountain.com, which was sold to Excite@Home in 1999 for $430 million available and $350 million in cash.

In February 1998, Polis founded ProFlowers, a web florist, in La Jolla, California.
