What Was happened with James “Jimmy” Keene

In 1996, James “Jimmy” Keene was arrested and sentenced to ten years in prison for his involvement in a large-scale drug operation. Only a few months into Keene’s sentence, the federal prosecutor who had sentenced him to prison approached him with an offer. He has the option of serving his full minimum-security prison sentence (without the possibility of parole) or going undercover for the FBI in a maximum-security prison to convince suspected serial killer Larry Hall (Paul Walter Hauser) to confess to several murders and reveal the locations of the victims’ bodies. Keene would be granted early release in exchange for his cooperation.

Despite the risks, Keene accepted the offer and was transferred to the United States Medical Center for Federal Prisoners in Springfield, Missouri, where he befriended Hall as an undercover informant. Once there, Keene slowly but steadily gained Hall’s trust, and he claims his fellow inmate eventually admitted to killing Tricia Lynn Reitler, 19, in 1993. Nonetheless, he refused to reveal the location of her body. Later, Keene approached Hall in the prison workshop, where he claims the suspect was carving wooden falcons and placing them on a map of Indiana, Illinois, and Wisconsin with red dots to “watch over the dead.”

Believing he’d uncovered sufficient evidence to fulfill his end of the deal and secure his release, Keane blew his cover and stopped pretending to be Hall’s friend. “I told him he was a … sicko. I told him that he was insane. I said that ‘You are one of the most despicable forms of human life on this planet,’” Keene recounted to CNN in 2011. The altercation landed Keene in solitary confinement, and by the time he got out, the map and falcons had disappeared. Regardless, prosecutors believed Keene had done enough to earn his freedom, and he was released from prison in 1999 after serving a total sentence of about 17 months.

Keene told host Lester Holt on NBC’s Dateline in 2012 that he’s especially proud that his book and expertise have led to the reopening of more cold case investigations, several of which involve Hall. Following his release from prison, Keene found success in real estate, and he even had discussions with Brad Pitt about adapting his story at one point. “I did a good deed and a lot of good things,” Keene, who now lives in Chicago and Los Angeles, said on Dateline. “And this is where I believe the redemption begins.” “I’ve done something good for the mistakes I made.”

Where is Jimmy Keene now?

Jimmy Keene is still alive and well, and he even got an executive producer credit and a cameo in the final episode of Black Bird. In 2010, Keene published In With the Devil: A Fallen Hero, a Serial Killer, and a Dangerous Bargain for Redemption, a book about his experiences with Hall. The book became a smash hit in the United States, with Brad Pitt initially attached to play Keene in a film adaptation back in 2010. It has since been reimagined as a series and is now known as Black Bird.

Taron Egerton told Radio Times about meeting his character’s real-life counterpart: “He made a brief appearance in the show, which was great fun, at a very intense, emotional, and dramatic point in the story. But he’s a really nice guy, and he was very happy that I got in shape to play him.”

“He just seemed really pleased, excited, and grateful that we were going to such lengths to tell his story in the best way we could,” the actor continued. In addition, Keene has appeared in a number of TV interviews and specials about his involvement in the Larry Hall case. Home Page
