Throughout his amateur career, he was a member of the Ontario Blue Jays of the Ontario Premier Baseball League (PBLO). This elite travel baseball team, comprised of the best young players in Ontario, competed in tournaments across North America on a regular basis. In Mississauga, Ontario, Naylor attended St. Joan of Arc Catholic Secondary School. At the age of 15, he made the Canadian junior national baseball team, winning silver at the Under-18 Baseball World Cup in South Korea in 2012.

He took bronze in the 2014 Under-18 Baseball World Cup and competed in the 2015 Under-18 Baseball World Cup.Naylor was ranked among the top 50 available prospects in the 2015 Major League Baseball Draft by Perfect Game, and he was named to Baseball America’s High School All-American first team.

Naylor was chosen as one of ten high school invitees to the MLB Junior Select Home Run Derby at Target Field during MLB All-Star Week in 2014, becoming the first Canadian to participate in the event.He came in second place.He later appeared in the Perfect Game All-American Classic at Petco Park and the Under Armour All-America Baseball Game at Wrigley Field in 2014.

The Miami Marlins selected Naylor in the first round of the 2015 MLB draft, with the 12th overall pick.After graduating from St. Joan of Arc on June 25, he signed with the Marlins for a reported signing bonus of $2.25 million and was assigned to the Gulf Coast Marlins of the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League for his professional debut.

Naylor appeared in 25 games for the Marlins, recording a.327 batting average, one home run, and 16 RBIs.Naylor began the 2016 season with the Class A South Atlantic League’s Greensboro Grasshoppers.He was suspended without pay in June after inadvertently injuring teammate Stone Garrett with a knife.

He was chosen to participate in the 2016 All-Star Futures Game.The Padres traded Naylor, Austin Hedges, Cal Quantrill, and minor leaguers Gabriel Arias, Owen Miller, and Joe Cantillo to the Cleveland Indians on August 31, 2020, in exchange for Mike Clevinger, Greg Allen, and Matt Waldron.

Naylor became the first player in MLB history to have five hits in his first five career postseason plate appearances in the 2020 American League Wild Card Series.On June 27, 2021, while trying to catch a pop up in shallow right field, Naylor collided with Minnesota Twins second baseman Ernie Clement. He broke and dislocated his ankle, forcing him to miss the rest of the season. Naylor became the first player in Major League history to hit two three-run home runs or grand slams in the ninth inning or later of the same game on May 9, 2022, against the Chicago White Sox.

He also became the first player since RBI became an official statistic in 1920 to have at least eight RBI in the eighth inning or later. His first was a game-tying grand slam off of Liam Hendriks in the top of the ninth to tie the game at 8, and his second was a go-ahead three-run home run off of Ryan Burr in the top of the 11th to win the game 12-9.
