Kenneth Kaunda served because the first President of independent Zambia . He played a number one role in Zambia’s independence movement. During his presidency, Kaunda , often served as a buffer between the states in southern Africa that were predominately white and therefore the independent states within the north that were predominately black.

In an attempt to maneuver the territory towards independence from British rule, he made a bold move by breaking faraway from the African National Congress.After his departure, he founded the Zambian African National Congress. The ZANC’s mission was to market the rights of black people, but after the upsurge of direct action , the party was banned. After his departure from the African National Congress and banning of the ZANC, Kaunda went on to become the top of the United National Independence Party.

Early Life and Family

Kenneth David Kaunda was born on April 28, 1924 at Lubwa Mission in Chinsali, Zambia (now Zambia). he’s the youngest of eight children. His father was an educator and a minister and his mother was the primary African woman to show in colonial Zambia.He attended the Munali Training Centre from 1941-1943.

The training center was located in Lusaka.After completion of his studies at the Training Centre, he went on to show at the Upper grade school in Lubwa in 1943. He was also the headmaster at the varsity from 1944 to 1947.After he left the varsity in Lubwa, he founded the farmers’ cooperative during a copper mining area. He also became a mine welfare officer in 1948.

Professional Career

Kaunda helped establish the African National Congress (ANC), the primary key anti-colonial establishment organization in Zambia . He served under ANC president Harry Nkumbula, from 1953-1958 because the group’s Secretary General .

In 1958, he became disenchanted with Nkumbula’s policies and left the African National Congress to determine the Zambia African National Union. His party was banned in 1959 after upsurge in direct action . This resulted in Kaunda spending nine months in jail.

After he was released in 1960, he became the president of the new United National Independence Party (UNIP). Two years later, he was elected to the legislature .In 1960, he visited Luther King Jr. in Atlanta, Georgia. Inspired by Luther King, Jr., he went on to determine direct action campaign, referred to as the Cha-cha-cha campaign. The participants during this campaign engaged in arson and blocking major roadways.

In October 1964, Zambia won its independence and Kaunda became the primary president.His charisma and intolerance for dissent helped him to stay in power but slowly and gradually, it clothed to be his downfall.In 1991, struggling to make multiparty politics, he stepped down from the presidency. Movement for Multiparty Democracy won the election with Frederick Chiluba as president.He retired from politics after being accused of being involved during a failed coup attempt in 1997.

To improve the education levels in his country, Kaunda implemented a policy that provided children with free school supplies like pens, pencils and exercise books. Children got these supplies no matter their parents’ financial situation.In 1968, he introduced the Mulungushi Reforms, during which he planned to accumulate major shares in foreign-owned firms so as to spice up the economy.

He managed to accumulate shares within the Anglo American Corporation and therefore the Rhodesia Selection Trust, consolidated the 2 companies, and called the new company Nchanga Consolidated Copper Mines (NCCM).

In 1964, during the Lumpa Crisis, Kaunda banned the Lumpa Church, creating animosity among the church and therefore the UNIP. Kaunda was never ready to fully mitigate the animosity.After his retirement from politics, Kaunda has worked towards fighting HIV/AIDS.
