Gladys Liu is a Hong Kong-born Australian politician who has served in the Australian House of Representatives since May 2019 as a member of the Liberal Party, representing the Chisholm Division in Victoria. Liu was the first ethnically Chinese woman to be elected to the House of Representatives, defeating Jennifer Yang of the Australian Labor Party. Although Liu has denied deliberately linking herself with CCP affiliates, she has been chastised for her supposed ties to the Chinese Communist Party. She has also slammed Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews’ Belt and Road Initiative contract with the People’s Republic of China.

She worked as an advisor to former Victorian Premiers Ted Baillieu and Denis Napthine before entering Parliament. In the 2010 Victorian state election, she ran as a Liberal Party candidate for the South Eastern Metropolitan Region of the Victorian Legislative Council, and in the 2014 Victorian state election, she ran for the Northern Metropolitan Region of the Victorian Legislative Council. Liu is a member of the Liberal Party’s National Right group.

Liu backed anti-government demonstrators in Hong Kong, her homeland, in July 2019, praising their “passion and devotion to democracy.” She informed The Australian that she supported the protest movement and its goals wholeheartedly. In a separate interview with The Age published in May 2020, Liu slammed Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews and the Labor Party for signing a Memorandum of Understanding with China in 2018, ostensibly enrolling Victoria in the Belt and Road plan. Liu, along with numerous other Australian MPs, condemned China’s disqualification of four members of the Hong Kong Legislative Council in November 2020.
