Lekan graduated with a Master’s degree in Administration and Economics from the institution in 1973. He began working for the Lamberth Local Government Social Services Department for a short time. He worked for the department for at least one and a half years after which his academics improved and he enrolled in a Ph.D. programme.

Balogun returned to ABU’s Centre for Social and Economic Research as a research fellow in 1973. He was given the opportunity to serve as a lecturer at the University of Ife, which is now Obafemi Awolowo University, at the time. However, he chose ABU over the other possibilities.

He picked ABU because he wanted to connect with other people who shared his birthplace and were familiar with the culture from which he is personally and originally descended. Balogun developed white-black consciousness during his time in the UK, and began to notice how people criticise, blame, support, and even make choices between white and black people. He recognised the struggle of ordinary people becoming activists and fighting for human rights.

Lekan Balogun joined the communist Marxist movement to express his emotions. When he decided to join Late Aminu Kano’s PRP in 1978, he entered the dark waters of politics.
