London Nicole Breed is an American politician from California who is the 45th mayor of the City and County of San Francisco. She was supervisor for District 5 and was president of the Board of Supervisors from 2015 to 2018.Raised in the Western Addition neighborhood of San Francisco, Breed worked in government after college. She was elected to the Board of Supervisors in 2012 and elected its president in 2015. As president of the Board, Breed, according to the city charter, became the acting mayor of San Francisco following the death of Mayor Ed Lee. She served in this role from December 12, 2017, to January 23, 2018.

London Breed Career
Breed worked as an intern in Mayor Willie Brown’s Office of Housing and Neighborhood Services. She became the executive director of the African American Art & Culture Complex in 2002, where she generated more than $2.5 million to rebuild the complex’s 34,000 square foot building, which included an art gallery, theatre, and recording studio. Breed was appointed to the Commission of the San Francisco Redevelopment Agency in 2004. She was appointed to the San Francisco Fire Commission by Mayor Gavin Newsom in 2010.
Breed defeated incumbent Christina Olague for the District 5 supervisor seat in November 2012, after Mayor Ed Lee appointed her after Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi was elected sheriff that year. Breed prevailed by more than 12 points after five rounds of ranked-choice voting, becoming the first challenger to unseat a district supervisor in San Francisco history.
Breed announced her reelection campaign for District 5 in February 2016. Building and protecting affordable housing, promoting public safety, improving environmental health, and updating public transit were among the top problems she mentioned in her statement. An attorney, Dean Preston, ran against her. On November 8, 2016, Breed won reelection with a 52 percent to 48 percent margin, defeating Preston in 46 of the district’s 68 precincts. On January 9, 2017, Breed was unanimously re-elected to a second two-year term as Board President. There were no other supervisors nominated for the job.Breed stood for mayor in a special election on June 5th.
She received 35.6 percent of the first-place votes in the original count, followed by Mark Leno with 25.9% and Kim with 22.8 percent. After the initial tallying of ranked-choice ballots, Leno took the lead early the next day, but Breed retook the lead on June 9. Leno accepted defeat on June 13, with 9,000 ballots still to be counted, and congratulated Breed on her triumph.
Breed and several other Northern California mayors backed Kamala Harris for president in the Democratic Party’s 2020 presidential primary on March 7, 2019.Harris later withdrew from the event. Breed backed Mike Bloomberg for president in the primaries on January 23, 2020.
After Kamala Harris was elected Vice President of the United States, Governor Gavin Newsom announced in December 2020 that Alex Padilla would succeed her as U.S. Senator. Breed and Willie Brown, the previous mayor of San Francisco, were disappointed that the seat was not filled by an African American woman, as Harris was the only African American woman in the Senate at the time.
