Matthew Robert Smith, was born on October 28, 1982, in Northampton. He has a sister named Laura Jayne, who was one of the dancers in Eric Prydz’s 2004 song “Call on Me” music video. Smith was a student at Northampton School for Boys. Smith had planned to play football after playing for the youth teams of Northampton Town, Nottingham Forest, and Leicester City, becoming captain of the latter’s youth team. Spondylolysis was caused by a serious back injury, and he was unable to continue his football career.

Smith’s cousin Leigh Killick, a drama teacher at his school, introduced him to acting by signing him up for theatrical productions without his permission. Leigh arranged for him to play the tenth juror in an adaptation of Twelve Angry Men after he failed to participate on the first two occasions. Smith made his television debut as Jim Taylor in the BBC adaptations of Sally Lockhart’s quartet novels The Ruby in the Smoke and The Shadow in the North. His first major television role was in the BBC drama series Party Animals, which starred fictional parliamentary advisors and researchers. Smith played Danny Foster, a parliamentary researcher who was described as an intelligent but shy “politics geek” who, at his age, should have moved on from research.

Mith was among the first actors to audition for the part, appearing on the first day.
