Mick Fanning Career

In 2001, Fanning won the Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach as a wild card entrant, making him one of Australia’s top surfers. He won the Billabong Pro at Jeffrey’s Bay in 2002, earning him a spot on the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Tour as World Qualifying Series (WQS) Champion and a spot on the 2002 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Tour.

In 2004, Fanning tore his hamstring. The injury was surgically corrected, and he went on to become one of the top surfers on the ASP world tour. Fanning was on the ASP World Tour for the sixth time since 2002, and the ASP World Qualifying Series for the ninth time since 1998. He started his 2007 World Title campaign (WCT) with a win at the Quiksilver Pro, the opening event on the ASP World Tour, which sent him to the top of the rankings. On November 6, 2007, he won the Santa Catarina Pro in Brazil, finishing ahead of Taj Burrow and Kelly Slater and securing the 2007 ASP world title.

In 2008, he had a groin injury in the middle of the season. In the end-of-year rankings, he fell to seventh place. Fanning recovered the ASP World Champion title in 2009 at Oahu’s North Shore’s Pipeline reef break. Despite being ousted in Round 4 by fellow Australian Dean Morrison, Fanning’s points lead from winning three of the previous four events was enough to secure victory. In 2013, he won Round 5 of the Billabong Pipeline Masters and advanced to the quarter-finals. Fanning won the 2015 Vans World Cup at Sunset Beach, Oahu, on December 3, 2015, for his first World Qualification Series (WQS) victory in Hawaiian surf.
