Mike Bossy Parents and Early Life

Now we are discussing his parents and Family. Bossy grew up in the parish of Saint-Alphonse, in the Ahuntsic-Cartierville region of Montreal, as the fifth of ten children in a family of Detroit Red Wings enthusiasts. Bossy went to Laval Catholic High School after attending St. Pius X Comprehensive High School. His mother Dorothy was English, and his father Borden was Ukrainian, as was their apartment building’s backyard ice rink. Bossy broke his kneecap while competing in long jump at school when he was 12 years old, and he later developed chronic knee troubles during his hockey career.

Bossy was a member of a minor ice hockey team from Montreal that competed in the 1969 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament. At the age of 15, he began his junior career with the Laval National of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. Despite scoring 309 goals in five seasons, NHL scouts thought he was “not robust enough” and had a mediocre defensive game. His 532 points are still a QMJHL record. The Acadie–Bathurst Titan, the current iteration of the former Laval franchise, retires Bossy’s #17.

Mike Bossy Career

Michael Dean Bossy (or, according to other sources, Michael Jean Bossy) was a Canadian retired professional ice hockey player who spent his entire NHL career with the New York Islanders, where he was a significant part of the team’s four-year Stanley Cup championship run in the early 1980s.

In 1978, Bossy was named NHL rookie of the year and won the Calder Memorial Trophy. In the 1982 Stanley Cup playoffs, he was named the most valuable player, winning the Conn Smythe Trophy. He is one of just two players to score Stanley Cup-winning goals in consecutive seasons (1982 and 1983), and the only player to score four game-winning goals in a single playoff series (1983 Conference Final).

He is the NHL’s all-time leader in average goals per regular season game, third in average points per regular season game, and one of just five players in NHL history to score 50 goals in 50 games. With nine, he is tied with Wayne Gretzky for the most 50-goal seasons, but his were consecutive, whereas Gretzky’s were not, hence Bossy holds the record for the most consecutive 50-goal seasons by himself. In 1991, Bossy was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame. He was voted one of the “100 Greatest NHL Players” of all time in 2017.
