Calix’s previous music was known for combining her warm voice with jittering beats, experimental electronic soundscapes, and natural sounds. For the first time in 2003, she collaborated with the London Sinfonietta. Nunu made her debut at the Royal Festival Hall in London, where she was part of a concert titled “Warp Works and 20th Century Masters.” The music was then performed by live insects, orchestra, and Calix on electronics all around the world. She’s used orchestration and live classical instruments in her performances and recordings since then.
She has composed music for dance, theatre, film, opera, and installations in collaboration with visual artists and musicians from different disciplines. Calix has received commissions from the London Sinfonietta, Bang on a Can, the Aldeburgh Festival, The Royal Shakespeare Company, Opera North, Streetwise Opera, the Manchester International Festival, National Arts Festival, Sydney Festival, Royal Northern Sinfonia, and others to write new works. Alexander’s Annexe is a band/ensemble she founded in 2004 with pianist Sarah Nicolls and sound designer David Sheppard. They made their debut at the Ravello Festival in Italy, and then went on to perform at the Aldeburgh Festival and the Parco della Musica in Rome.
In November 2006, Alexander’s Annexe released the album Push Door To Exit on Warp.Calix used lower case for all of her works and albums after rejecting capitalization when she first encountered ee cummings’ work as a child.Calix has supported and travelled with musicians such as Radiohead, Boards of Canada, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Autechre, and others as a live performer and DJ. Sonar, Glastonbury, All Tomorrow’s Parties, Coachella, Latitude, and other music venues and festivals were among her stops.
