Paul Dear was an Australian rules footballer who played in the Australian Football League for the Hawthorn Football Club (AFL). Paul Dear, the younger brother of fellow Hawk ruckman Greg Dear, was the smaller of the two, standing at 188cm to Greg’s 199cm.
Paul would occasionally second ruck for the team, despite giving up inches to taller opponents. When the Latrobe Valley was in the Hawthorn zone, the Dear brothers were recruited. Dear, a half forward, made his debut in 1987 and appeared in the Grand Final that year. He filled in at full forward for the injured Jason Dunstall but was defeated.
Dear was consistently named as an emergency after failing to break into the side during the back-to-back premiership years of 1988 and 1989.He got a regular game in 1990, playing 23 games, and his form continued into 1991. He earned his premiership medallion by scoring two goals in Hawthorn’s 1991 Grand Final victory over West Coast and winning the Norm Smith Medal. By dominating across the Hawthorn half forward line and setting up several goals, Dear almost single-handedly turned a nine-point deficit into a ten-point half-time lead.
Paul Dear Cause of Death
In 2020 Dear was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. He died in July 2022, just one week before Hawthorn was to play in the “Dare to Hope” match to raise money for Dear’s charity foundation.
