She went to Wasilla High School and was a member of the girls’ basketball and cross-country running teams as well as the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. During her senior year, she was co-captain and point guard for the basketball team that won the 1982 Alaska state championship, earning her the moniker “Sarah Barracuda” for her competitive spirit. Palin attended the University of Hawaii at Hilo after graduating from high school in 1982. Sarah Louise Palin is an American politician, commentator, author, and reality television personality who served as Alaska’s ninth governor from 2006 to 2009. She was the Republican vice presidential nominee in 2008, running alongside US Senator John McCain. Palin was elected to the Wasilla city council in 1992 and was elected mayor in 1996.

She was appointed chair of the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission in 2003, following an unsuccessful run for lieutenant governor. The commission is responsible for overseeing the state’s oil and gas fields for safety and efficiency. She became Alaska’s youngest and first female governor in 2006, when she was 42 years old. The high legal fees incurred by Palin and the state of Alaska as a result of her fights against ethics investigations forced her resignation in 2009.

Palin was nominated for vice president at the 2008 Republican National Convention, shortly after McCain’s campaign announced her selection. She was the first female Republican vice presidential nominee and the second female major party vice presidential nominee after Geraldine Ferraro in 1984.
