Adams joined Arsenal as a teenager in 1980. Four weeks after his 17th birthday, he made his first-team debut against Sunderland in the First Division on November 5, 1983. Adams became a regular in the 1986-87 season, winning his first major trophy that year in the Football League Cup Final victory over Liverpool at Wembley Stadium.

Adams was a member of Arsenal’s “famous back four,” which included Lee Dixon, Nigel Winterburn, and Steve Bould, and was known for its disciplined use of the offside trap under George Graham. At the age of 21, he became Arsenal captain on January 1, 1988; he would remain club captain for the next 14 years until his retirement.

Adams announced his retirement from professional football in August 2002, just before the start of the 2002-03 season, after a career spanning nearly 20 years, with his final match being the 2002 FA Cup Final. He was Arsenal’s most successful captain, having played 674 games for the club. The number 6 jersey worn by Adams was not worn again until the 2006-07 season, when it was assigned to Philippe Senderos. As of 2020, it is currently assigned to Gabriel.

Adams had applied to become Brentford manager following the resignation of Steve Coppell shortly before his retirement as a player, but his application was turned down.Arsenal honoured him with a testimonial game against Celtic in May 2002, featuring many Arsenal legends, including Ian Wright, John Lukic, and Adams’ fellow back four stalwarts, Dixon, Winterburn, and Bould. The game ended 1-1, with Lee Dixon scoring in his final appearance for the Gunners.

In March 2003, just seven months after his retirement and while still with Arsenal, BBC Sport named Adams as the former Arsenal player who would benefit the most from a return.Adams was inducted into the English Football Hall of Fame in 2004 for his contributions to the English game, and he was voted third in the club’s 50 Greatest Gunners poll in 2008.

On December 9, 2011, a statue of Adams was unveiled outside Emirates Stadium to commemorate the club’s 125th anniversary. Manager Herbert Chapman, as well as Arsenal’s all-time leading scorer Thierry Henry and, later, Dennis Bergkamp, were memorialised with statues outside the stadium.
