Willie was a member of several bands throughout elementary and high school. One of the grade school bands was called the Echoes, and it was with this band that they entered a televised talent show in Omaha, Nebraska; the Echoes won and were asked back for guest appearances on the show, anchored by Willie’s great drum performance.
In high school, he joined a number of bands and received professional training at the Stan Kenton summer jazz camp, which included teaching from the Berkeley School of Music’s faculty. Willie earned his bachelor’s degree in music in 1970 from Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas, where he majored in piano and drummed in numerous undergraduate bands.
Willie chose to come to Southern California after graduating from college in 1971, where his chances of working in the music industry would be considerably boosted. Willie was quite busy doing session work and working with local musicians for the first few years, as well as doing a lot of free lance work.
